WHO IS PATRIOTIC?

This is a question of today to the citizens of Tanzania which sounds like a myth but an awful reality. For about years patriotic feeling is associated with the love of one’s own country, where sacrifice of wealth and even life was involved. Is this still the case today? If yes, what could be its manifestation? Usually, this happened during the array of conflicts, restlessness and war. One of the writers Ernest Hemingway said “It is sweet and fitting to die for ones country, but in modern war, there is nothing sweet nor fitting in your dying. You will die like a dog for no good reason.’’ This means dying and other sacrifices no longer are the crowns for patriotism in the modern world. In history, our victory in the Kagera war really boosted people’s trust and hope for our land, the ex soldiers who are still alive today can still explain this feeling. Our first president had to resign his job with his acquaintances to start nationalism race. We can’t deny them as stone patriotic figures but all this will not be relevant today to define Patriotism. Since we are a peaceful nation, is this feeling limited only to war and distress? Is it bound to leaders alone? Well, I don’t think so. Adlai Stevenson says “Patriotism is not short, frenzied outbursts of emotion, but the tranquil and steady dedication of a lifetime”. It is therefore not a mere feeling, not temporary, but a combination of feelings or strong will and actions that prevails in everyday’s life. Mr.Kingunge one of the oldest government official once said “Patriotism is not lost”. It is working and lives inside people. But how is it manifested today? Is it through being a sports or party fan? Or is it seen during competition in between nations? Probably more .If patriotism is the devotion that a citizen feels for the soil that he or she belongs to, it means more than fighting wars, it entails to contributing to the national development through obeying the laws and performing your duties as a citizen of the United republic of Tanzania. A citizen is every Tanzanian. If we are looking for a better version of Tanzania, we, citizens of the United Republic of Tanzania are obliged to embrace this feeling of belonging and responsibility without any excuse.
