My voice

What democracy means to me is my participation that is through voicing my opinion. I feel a part of my government and my country when am able to speak out what is in my mind because I know through my voice I can make a better change. My voice is my participation; Citizen Participation is usually considered a valuable element of a democratic citizenship and democratic decision-making. Many theorists claim that citizen participation has positive effects on the quality of democracy. Through voicing out my opinion on important matters, l get to participate in doing the right things for my country with my voice.

“Everyone has the right to freedom of opinion and expression; this right includes freedom to hold opinions without interference and to seek, receive and impart information and ideas through any media and regardless of frontiers,” reads Article 19, Universal Declaration of Human Rights.

My voice can be heard through media, dialogues, and speeches. However, being a media person, media freedom has their limit which means that ‘there is freedom before speech but freedom after expression is not guaranteed.’ This is very common in Tanzania and it means I should speak something that should not harm another person. I believe that my voice will bring great impact to my community as much as anybody’s, but how is my freedom guaranteed after voicing out. I am still in dilemma on that and I actually find another better way to raise my voice.

I now know that I can voice out through my vote, this I didn’t know before until the last year general elections in 2015 campaigns. It was my first time to participate in election to vote for the leader of my choice. I have always been waiting for this opportunity and finally I reached the age that I could actually vote, I was listening to political party speeches and the contestant elaborated on how my voice can be raised higher through my one vote since the leader I choose will be representing my voice in the parliament. I got another better way to give out my opinion, I voted for exactly right leader who is now carrying my voice to the top.
